Above: Annie Davies exploring line as shape-maker.
Take part in a workshop in contemporary painting and drawing that emphasizes the formal elements of line and mark. Explore ways in which line and mark can be the primary subject matter of a work. Investigate various ways in which they can activate pictorial space, create motion and tension, serve as shape maker, represent edge, and evoke mood. Discover ways of organizing them into compelling compositional relationships that serve as metaphors for life: repetition, rhythm, flux, structure. Features shared, hands-on challenges and interactive group critiques. Not media specific--you'll work with both painting and drawing materials.

This new course is a hybrid between two other workshops:
"Nonobjective Composition" and "Processes of Abstracting from a Reference."
Join us for the inaugural session...
Artist-participant
Beverly Munchel-Kievit at work.
Join us for an exciting
and challenging introduction to abstract painting. The workshop focuses on two areas of concentration.
The first focus is on the language of non-objective composition. Explore what art can say IN ADDITION TO
OR APART FROM its traditional purposes of describing external appearances,
telling literary narratives, and expressing specific and pre-determined
emotions. Develop your understanding of what nonobjective
compositions mean, and how and why they work. Shared challenges will guide you on your way.
The second focus explores a variety of ways of abstracting from a visual reference.
Whenever you work from the visible, you inevitably select, distill, arrange, and alter the visual forces you find at your disposal. Here, you'll look at a broad range of possibilities taken from art history and contemporary art. Then, a series of shared challenges will guide you on your exploration and enable you to find approaches that are satisfying to you.
While the majority
of hands-on challenges are executed in painting and drawing media,
this workshop is neither media not technique specific, and no technical
expertise is required. Features regular interactive discussion
and critique.

A rare opportunity for a week of semi-private art coaching with Steve Aimone. This workshop format mimics the atmosphere and mindset of a graduate school fine art studio. Artists develop an individual "contract" or mission statement outlining areas and issues to explore during the session. These contracts are shared at the outset in an opening interactive roundtable discussion.
Each artist is then allocated a generous amount of wall space to set up their own work area in which they work on their contract in consultation with Steve. Group discussions--small group and full group, formal and informal--occur throughout the session, fostering a sense of cooperation and community. Artist statements are shared, discussed, and revised. The workshop ends in a final interactive critique in which each artist's contract is reviewed, and in which participants share discoveries and revelations.
